Kate's linkup is live, and we're pondering the word "want" this week.
"This world has nothing for me, and this world has everything.
All that I could want and nothing that I need."
I first heard this song in college and it has not lost its appeal.
Want versus need has been a lesson we have tried to teach our girls from the very beginning. We are still learning it ourselves. The discipline of good decision-making comes from delaying impulse and making rational decisions.
Budgeting money, time, calories, all are tied to thinking past the short-term time frame.
If I don't eat cake tonight, I will reach my fitness goals faster. Is this temporary want worth the long-term results?
Will delayed pleasure be worthwhile? A difficult question posed to our young people. I want to feel loved, but I Need commitment.
Jesus can be "all I want, all I need, everything, everything!" (Lifehouse)

Ps please tell me your linkup number. 😊
Hi Tammy, Yes "we are still learning it ourselves", I so agree as we also have girls and desire to impart that importance of want vs need. It is a learning process all round! Blessings! My link-up number is 17.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! And, oh, how I loved your poetry. What a blessing to have you right next to me this week. I needed your post!
DeleteLove,
Tammy
Very true, want vs. need. We definitely need to train our hearts to listen to the right voices on this one!
ReplyDeleteYour FMF neighbor at #15.
Thank you, Katha.
DeleteSo glad to have you next to me this week! Your post was excellent!
Love,
Tammy
I like the song- I haven't heard it before. So true that it as an on-going lesson to know the difference between our needs and our wants. Your comment about delaying impulse and weighing up the temporary want against the long-term results made me think of this video- "The Marshmallow Test" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX_oy9614HQ I don't know if you've seen it before but I think you'd like it. I'm at #44.
ReplyDeleteCarly,
DeleteI've read the story though I haven't watched that video. :) I'm somewhat impulsive, so I am not sure at a young age if I could have resisted the one marshmallow for the promise of two. The prize has to be of enough worth to wait for it.
I'm thankful that some of the things I've waited for have been truly worth waiting for.
I believe Jesus will be the ultimate "worth waiting for"!! :D

Tammy
Yep. Impulse control is so difficult--even for old people like me! It's a muscle we have to work out daily, or we start to get self-indulgent. Thank you for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteAnita,
DeleteI giggle every time you refer to yourself as "old". You really aren't. I'm sure our age gap is smaller than the gap between myself and my students. I have always preferred to learn from those with more experience, so I purpose to always be friends with you.
we can be work-out whales together! ;)

Tammy
So true... I'm always coming up against this battle! Great reminder to choose the long term reward over the short term gain... (At #9 this week!)
ReplyDelete:) Emma, the more I know you, the more alike I feel.
DeleteSo glad to resonate with you, as you also resonated with me.
Love,
Tammy
Good reminder of the why we do what do and choose what we choose, especially when it comes to what lasts! Glad to stop by again. Thanks for sharing. Stopping by from FMF #11
ReplyDeleteOh Shannon, you blessed me so much with your post this week!

I missed the party this week too. I love Caedmon's Call. One of my songs of theirs is "Shifting Sand!" Great post. I'm in the #8 spot this week.
ReplyDeleteTara,
